Back in June I was lucky enough to take part in the Bozzini Quartet Composer’s Kitchen. It was an intensive week-and-a-bit of working with this excellent group of humans to develop a new piece whilst staying in (mostly) sunny Montréal. The piece I wrote involved a fair degree of improvisation by the group around a core idea as I fumbled my way towards the kind of sounds I was after and I was rather happy with their full-blooded commitment in realising the piece. Plus I got to do this alongside Leo Chadburn, Jimmie Leblanc and Luke Nickel, discovering their quite extraordinary and beautiful music in the process and mentored by the wit and wisdom of Jennifer Walshe and Martin Arnold. It was an unforgettable experience – and best of all we get to do it all again in November at hcmf.
